Seasons

Hello,

This week we are learning about our seasons.

Spring begins on March 21st

Summer begins June 21st

Fall begins on September 23rd

Winter begins December 22nd

In class this week we are learning about what happens to the trees during each of the seasons. Here is a fun website that will help your child see A Year in the Life of a Tree. You and your child can discover what happens to the tree in each season. Your child can also learn a few fun facts about each season.

At the Sticks and the Seasons website your child can help each season progress. This is an interactive game where your child can help the flowers grow in Spring, build a snowman in winter and so on. In each season your child can see what happens to the trees and flowers.

The last website is just for fun. Here you can print out a color page for your child. They can color the apple tree in all for seasons.

Making Decisions

Dear Parents,

This week we are working on making decisions. Learning about making decisions is part of our science TEKS. Your child should know that information and critical thinking are used in decisions. The students are expected to make decisions using information.

Our class is going to work on our decision making skills by learning about recycling. At the Meet the Greens website you can watch a video about recycling. There are several videos at this site. The Reuse Episode can give your child ideas on what they can do with their coke cans instead of throwing them away. You can also enjoy some of the other activities at this site.

At the next exciting site your child can read a book and use their sorting skills to decide which item goes in what barrel. In the activity your child can see as they pick up the trash the animals come back around. Also if your child gets stuck on a word as they read they can click on that word and they will hear how to say it. I hope this site will help your child make the decision to not be a litter bug.

This last website is a litter hunt. It may be a little tough for your child so you may need to help them. They will find the trash hidden in the picture. After they find each piece of trash you can find out what trash can be recycled and what can not. Have fun with this one!!

Living and Non-Living

Hello Parents,

In Science this week we are working on Living organisms and Non Living objects.
To be classified as living, an organism must be able to carry out the following activities:

1. Living things are made of cells.
2. Living things obtain and use energy.
3. Living things grow and develop.
4. Living things reproduce.
5. Living things respond to their environment.
6. Living things adapt to their environment.

Here is a video that will show some living organisms and non living objects. After you watch the video you can discuss with your child what thing they saw in the video were living and which ones were non living.

At the Sorting Living and Non Living thing site your child can use the sorting skills we learned last week. In this activity your child will sort the pictures into the correct box (living or non living). You can discuss with your child why they put the items in the living or non living box.

This is a fun activity where your child can pick out the living plants and animals in the picture. Then they can match what the living plants and animals turn into as they grow. You can also help your child take a quiz about the plants and animals they have been working with in the activity.

Learning about living organisms and non living objects is part of the science TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) The students are expected to group living organisms and non living objects.

Sorting Fun

Dear Parents,

Our class is learning about sorting objects based on their properties.

Plants and Animals

Metal and Wood

Glass and Rubber

These are just a few examples.

Here is a fun website you can explore with your child. At this website your child can sort objects based on what they are made from. Then you can help your child take a quiz about the items they sorted.

We are also learning about Venn Diagrams. Some items can fit in to two categories. At the Sorting With Hampshire site you and your child can help Hampshire the pig organize his room by sorting things in to a Venn Diagram.

This one is an easy one. For a little more practice try Sorting Living Things. This is a site that can help your child sort plants and animals.

Learning about sorting objects is part of the science TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) The students are expected to sort objects and events based on properties and patterns.

Have a great time sorting objects with your child. I hope that these activities gets your child thinking about all the different ways things can be sorted.
